REC News
This week at St Joseph’s Church, Deacon Joe spoke about the importance of gratitude. This was prompted by the story in the Gospel reading about the ten lepers.
In this story, ten ill people were noticed by Jesus as he travelled on the border between two regions, Samaria and Galilee. He advised them to go to their priests and as they turned to leave, they were cleansed. At that time, one, and only one, of these people returned to Jesus and thanked him.

The story of the ten lepers reminds us of the importance of recognising God’s work in our lives and taking time to give thanks. Being grateful for the blessings we receive is an important virtue. Gratitude is more than saying “thank you”; it’s an attitude that reminds us that everything we have is a gift from God. When we practice gratitude, we become more aware of God’s presence in our daily lives and respond with joy, humility, and generosity.
One simple idea for reminding ourselves to practice gratitude is by using a gratitude journal. By noticing and naming moments for which we can be grateful, we can learn to develop a habit of thankfulness that strengthens our relationship with God and with others.
Gratitude can lead us then to action. As an individual or a community, we can look for ways to express our thankfulness by serving others. Whether through an appreciative smile, a letter of appreciation, an act of generosity or a simple act of kindness, our goal would be to show that a thankful heart is a generous heart.
I invite you to join me in this journey of making gratitude part of daily home life — share one thing you are thankful for each night amongst your family. This could then be the source of shared family prayer. Let us all be reminded, as St. Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, to “give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Upcoming Events
Grandparents Day
Next week, on Wednesday 22nd October, we warmly welcome grandparents and families to join us in our Communion Service in gratitude of grandparents. This celebration will be prepared by the Kindergarten and Year One Class.
Socktober Event
On Friday 31st October, as part of our commitment to Catholic Missions, we will be participating in our annual Socktober event. The day will begin with a Mission Liturgy, highlighting our country of focus, which is Zambia, particularly the Zambian Diocese of Mpika. All are welcome to attend.
The liturgy will be followed by a shared morning tea. After morning tea, we are hoping that as many parents as possible can stay for our Students versus Grown Ups Socktober Penalty Shootout. The students will then rotate through a variety of Socktober themed fundraising activities. Hope to see you there!
